I think religion should be taught in schools. From an academic standpoint, not just one and not just the Christian judeo but as many as possible to create a good contrast. It should include all the merits such as prescribed Behavior that has social or health benefits. It should also include the flaws and the highly implausible stories. It should also compare and contrast atheism. I realize that some of you might say well what are the cons of atheism? And other than the lack of spiritual stuff, I would cite it's over-reliance and belief in science, as opposed to a critical acceptance of science. Blind Faith in science creates issues of groupthink, and making changes too quickly when it isn't it prudent. For an example see the egg and its position as unhealthy or healthy in any given decade based on science.

I wish they would add such a class. In a HS, it could be one of the SS choices. In the south here it would be helpful to hopefully enlighten some of the sheep to think.

@Elganned that’s might be true.

Sounds good to me if it can be fitted in. I’m assuming you mean high schools.

How about an intro to philosophy—just a broad overview and lots of discussion should help a lot of young people.

I went to school in Sweden and that is how they teach religion. We learn about the different faiths.

Unfortunately probably not enough space in the curriculum. You need to do a degree for that. Overview is all you’re really going to get. As an example Ancient Babylonian and Zoroastrianism philosophy are really required to understand the foundations of Judaism and thereby Christianity, but that is not likely to happen

And it is taught in the schools...at least in NYC....but -as you say- only to show its influence on mankind.

The religous people wouldn’t like that. I agree that religion has to much influence in government but unfortunately we need the help of the religous right wing in order for the conservatives to have a chance to win elections. Wouldn’t want to get the religous to mad at us for that very reason.

@Trajan61 I agree....but the truth is that NYC -in Social Studies- only teaches religion as to the importance this vermin have had on mankind...specially Christianity (III-IV centuries).

I was able to refer to the atrocities inflicted on people by Christianity whenever I taught literature...and because the students were wiser than their parents. 🙂
