Thank you for reassuring me that there’s nothing more important in this world than a man who’s his own worst enemy.
Thanks for the update ??

It's getting inexorably closer, but is by no means a fait accompli.

There's an interesting article in the Atlantic today on this topic, trying to explain the GOP mindset. It points out that while the Democratic party is hardly pure as the driven snow, it at least represents a diverse bunch of people seeking consensus and common cause, whereas the GOP has always had a far narrower constituency (the plutocrats essentially) and represents more an insurgency based on power for power's sake. As such it feels no real compunction to play by the rules. Trump didn't introduce the concept of ruthlessness, but merely normalized it so it can be right out in the open. Hence, extreme gerrymandering, faux "concerns" about "election fraud", the passage of many other measures that put liberal candidates at a disadvantage. Things like the laws being passed in Wisconsin to strip the incoming Democratic administration of some of its powers.

As such, we have to recognize that the GOP is and will remain, "proudly" craven actors. They will not turn on Trump because he's a liar or felon or even a traitor. We should believe Orin Hatch when he says he "doesn't care" that Trump is guilty, only that he's "doing a good job" (holding onto power).

The GOP will turn on Trump only when he's seen as a greater liability than an asset in terms of consolidating GOP influence and power over time. Concern for appearances are no longer relevant to them. Now that they have crossed certain Rubicons of shamelessness, and have gotten away with it, they are unburdened by the need to even seem ethical.
