A Visit to the Vet.

I recently brought my cat to the vet for a teeth clearing. While there I couldn't help but notice the steady stream of people coming and going with their pet dogs and cats and rabbits, etc., and also paying very high vet bills - vet services do NOT come cheap!

And that brought to me the thought that while every now and again you'll read about someone committing some horrendous form of animal abuse, you never read about the thousands and thousands of people who daily take extraordinary care of their pets. I mean an abuse story generates a headline, but a story that Mary takes her dog out for a walk or that someone takes home an animal picked up from an animal welfare organization / shelter or that someone spends thousands of dollars for an operation on their sick pet - that's not news.

So there's a perspective here. For every horrendous animal abuse story that makes the news, there are thousands and thousands and thousands of good news animal stories that never make any headlines at all.

On Facebook, half the posts I see are about stories of rescue and adoption !

In some ways the state of animals is no different than humans. Bad news gets more attention and more people riled up. And actually people need to be aware of the awful things that are perpetrated upon animals by people, in order to know what to look for , and possibly prevent them !

You are correct. I have two rescue dogs and an health insurance policy for them would almost equal what we pay for our selfs. I personally think we should be able to add them to our policies. Your homeowners policies allow all types of additions like wedding coverage, theft etc. Having sold insurance for forty years I see no reason why it couldn't be added to a homeowners or health policy.

That is true,. But sadly, it is also true that good intentions often do much more harm than deliberate cruelty. For every person who beats their dog into ill health, there are a hundred who think nothing of feeding their pets inappropriate food until their health is destroyed by obesity and type two diabetes etc. We all know this on this site, because we know that it is the way of the world, that huge harm is done by things like religions, most of whose members are quite sure they are there for the very best of reasons.
