Synchronicity: an interesting concept insofar as it doesn’t involve crystals or channeling spirits.
Today I read another post about prophecy, and it reminded me of the ex post facto meaning of Halley’s comet and the Norman Invasion. We easily and frequently impart significance to events that are merely synchronous, especially if circumstances are traumatic or bring about tremendous change.
Once I dreamed an EF5 tornado destroyed my town, and two weeks later, one did. I know that wasn’t prophecy so much as it was the timely manifestation of primitive fears legitimately held by those who live in tornado alley. But other times, I have allowed myself to ascribe meaning to events more subtle in their synchronicity, even as my rational mind comprehends the absurdity.
Recently, someone close to me brought up a rare book (by most standards) that I’m CURRENTLY reading. I’ve never verbalized my interest in this subject to anyone, ever, so his mention of it seemed significant somehow.
My grandmother has Alzheimer’s, and she’s been on my mind a lot lately. She’s a birder, or used to be, and I remember a particular species she’d point out—the Indigo Bunting. She told me that blue is nature’s rarest color. Yesterday, I saw one—a rare color in a rare location in a very unlikely season. It didn’t mean anything, but it did.
Is there therapeutic value in this tendency to construct meaning? Do you ever, with an indifference to logic, create meaning from coincidence?
Recently when I awoke and was making the bed it occurred to me that the comforter had never been washed. I scrutinized it carefully and decided it was ok.
I went downstairs and greeted my partner who was just waking up. She told me of a dream she’d just had about the white comforter—that she was looking to see if it needed washing.
Nobody will ever convince me that it was coincidence. There’s more to this world than meets the eye.
I think that you are correct to not believe in the prophetic nature of your tornado dream, but incorrect to totally dismiss the possibility. It is hard to really know for certain. According to the von Neumann–Wigner interpretation of quantum mechanics, consciousness is an essential component of reality. How the material world interacts with our minds is a not-yet-resolved question.
@PaigeM For people with good intuitive skills I believe that the well known expression is to "go with your gut feeling". Perhaps that dream about bad weather helped you to be more prudent and avoid harm. In my case I have limited intuitive skills, and need to rely more on my reasoning ability.
Wow, this is a beautiful post. I do this a lot more than I'd like to admit OR allow myself to get away with honestly. I think it's human to do it. It's like that thing where you're only seeing patterns because you noticed a pattern and now you are seeing this one pattern wherever you look. For some reason the dungeon thing... This is weird but, in Alanis Morisette lyrics there is talk of "a dungeon". I read Jordan Peterson's book and he was using a dungeon analogy also. Is it safe to assume that dungeon legend is prevailing in Canadian culture? There's no way they could have simulcast as the works are 19 years apart. I'll come back.
@PaigeM you're welcome. I REALLY like your writing style. Are you pro or something?
@PaigeM You're cute too. Too bad you are spoken for. All the good ones are taken. You ever notice that?
@PaigeM Me neither. I'm having a good night and love the world too much probably, however, which is the lovely thing about trust and all. I guess we all have to give and take. I keep forcing myself to write lately and sometimes I swear to fuck it's all I've got.
Write more, read even more.
Sometimes reading those lists helps too. You've got something, I would know trust me don't let good talent go to waste!
