I consider religious fervor to be a form of mental illness. First, the belief itself is irrational and that translates to a delusional state. Adding energy to that just makes it worse. However, we also know that attitude can and often does have a powerful effect on the functioning of the body -- mind and body are connected. If the attitude leads to a curative effect, good. There are many ailments where the mind can work wonders. The down side is, if it doesn't, you're dead. I would opt for medical science every time plus a positive outlook.

I don't distinguish much difference between religious fervor and the mob mentality...

People will do things as part of a mob that they would never do as individuals, which is a kind of temporary insanity, ahnd many will regret what they did a part of a mob, afterwards. I think religious fervor is dangerous in that peopel will cultivate losing themselves drawn into a mob mentality, and may do so in a nonreligious context, committing acts of great destruction and harm.

As an example of the above, the Catholic Church instilled in their people that it was wrong to not just blindly obey the authority of the church, which was co-opted by the Nazis leading up to and during WWII. Hitler himself considered himself to be a good catholic up to the end. The religious fervor was transformed into political fervor and millions died as a result. The justification of many Nazis on trial was they were just following orders, which is what they had been taught to do.lblindly obery authority wihto0u8t question, all their lives by way of religion.
