Normal root ball extends A Lot farther down...the tree will look okay for awhile but be dead in about 18 months, depending on weather.

I wonder if the had to cut the tap root off? Not sure of the pin oaks root structure? Might not have a substantial tap root with most of its roots extendly laterally.

Those root systems are so massive that I always wonder, even with "successful" moves how much damage is done and how long will the tree take to recover. Still, moving is always preferable to destroying.
