I am auditing a graduate level course in Rhetoric and have been introduced to the concept of New Materialism. Classical rhetoric believed that spoken and written words, speakers and audiences all have fixed roles and purposes. New Materialism suggests that words, symbols, ideas, people, culture, religion, all are interactive in a time-space cartography. Anyway, I was thinking about how people dismiss Astrology as totally bogus, but are more sympathetic regarding the way people interact with religious beliefs. Both are abstract word clouds that allow people to see shapes of ideas in relation to their own experiences and allow them to accept or reject what is said. Religion is often very negative in its warnings and restrictions, whereas astrology is more affirming and encouraging. It's a much better starting point for guiding our intereactions with others, IMHO.

I'm reading "Romeo and Juliet" with my honors 9th grade classes. I've read it many, many times, and I love it. But I have to say that it is hard to think of the play without thinking of religion or astrology. Both seem to be the grease that turns the narrative wheels, and informs everything from character to themes.

Star crossed lovers! Yes, literature always looks for poetic allusions to human foibles.

If we see astrology and religion as manipulative, are you saying you think astrology is less deleterious and potentially motivating in a positive way when compared with religion?

Both religion and astrology, by themselves, are harmless. It is only in their application by humans that they become harmful. Belief systems, be they stars or gods, are what humans make of them. The same can be said for political systems, or economic policies. I think astrology currently has less harmful interpretations by humans than most religions.Don't make me get all Mars rising in my Taurus on you.....
