In most cases, and in the vast majority of people, "reasoning" functions as follows.
- confronted with a question or problem, person "P" has an intuition.
- "P" immediately identifies with that intuition ("This is my opinion, therefore it must be a good and smart opinion, because I am a good and smart person" )
- Reason is activated in order to find data and arguments that flesh out and support the intuition.
- "P" argues that anybody who does not agree with his/her opinion must be stupid, deluded, misguided or on the payroll of [insert the name of an organization or corporation you dislike]

Ummm, how about if "P" has actual knowledge? Why do you assume they are relying on "intuition"?????

Due to 4, unbelievers, who usually of necessity have broken out of this cycle of reasoning in order to change their views, are accused by believers of using exactly that cycle of reasoning. Pure projection, although, occasionally an unbeliever can slip into the same pattern with their new views I suppose.
