Aliens? Why does that word frighten people so much? It IS an interesting concept. I wonder if the opposing scientists have religious beliefs? [msn.com]

The term alien doesn't scare the layman. It only scares the experts. That's simply because to make extraordinary claims you need extraordinary proof. ʻOumuamua is racing out of the solar system faster than we can catch it. We were ill prepared to fully study such a short lived visitor. We are not going to be able to prove anything about ʻOumuamua.

What we need to do is to be prepared in case there is another opportunity. There is a theory that if there are extraterrestrial beings that they might send massive amounts of probes closely fitting ʻOumuamua's description. Sent out to discover new worlds. They would be numerous and likely simple. Due to the distance and time many might fail. They might have self regenerative or self duplication technology. We should act like this is a common occurrence and prepare for the next one.

He might sound crazy to you guys, but I KNOW that he is being 1000% truthful.

I can't get into details, but "I" can say he's right.

I'm not here to argue or to try to convince anyone of anything and start sounding like those nutty religious folks. Although, it does come off this way until it happens to you. That's fine.

Not even Top Secret military folks are allowed to speak of the matter either.

I'll leave it here.

@TheMiddleWay Because we are not trying to convert anyone. And you're right. Until you see it for yourself, you simply cannot know.

I'm simply stating that I know he's right. "I".

I will not comment anymore on this.

By 'Aliens' I assume you mean Extra Terrestials. Why does the word frighten people? The same way as the Bogey Man or Vampires etc. Opposing scientists? Who are they? I think most scientists would not deny the existence of life elsewhere in the universe, but, find it highly unlikely we will encounter any, due to vast distances of an ever expanding universe. There is no spacecraft imaginable that would make interstella travel practicle, within the laws of physics as they understand them today.

"Aliens? Why does that word frighten people so much?"

The film Alien (1979) has been analysed as an example of how in horror and science fiction monstrous representations of the female resonate with the abject archaic figure of the mother. Bodily dismemberment, forcible impregnation, and the chameleon nature of the alien itself may all be seen as explorations of phantasies of the primal scene, and of the encounter with the boundaryless nature of the original abject mother." Way back. "The Thing" Creature frozen in ice is thawed and proceeds to wreak havoc. "The day the Earth stood still". They attacked him for no reason other than fear and lack of knowledge. Much of that fear exists today in society.

A chunk of rock whips through the system and he screams aliens? Occam's razor man.

Sometimes I wonder if skepticism is a valid spin-off of fear?

@IAJO163 it's more of 'wildly improbable theory does not hold the same weight as a reasonable theory'
