American Humanist Association

Dear Friend,

Conservatives in Congress just reintroduced the deceptively-named Free Speech Fairness Act, which would greatly weaken the Johnson Amendment. The Johnson Amendment is the federal law which prohibits houses of worship and other organizations which receive tax-deductible donations from participating in elections.

If the Johnson Amendment is weakened churches could flood our electoral process with dark money and make elections even less transparent than they are now. And while we have been able to defeat previous attempts to either repeal or weaken the Johnson Amendment, we need your help right now to make sure that the Johnson Amendment isn’t destroyed.

Contact your Representative and Senators and tell them to oppose the Free Speech Fairness Act!

The Religious Right is hoping that Americans won’t take notice and stand up to their attempts to sneakily harm the Johnson Amendment, but I know that humanists are determined to protect the separation of church and state and a transparent elections process. Tell Congress to reject this bad bill and support the Johnson Amendment!

Thank you for protecting our elections and the separation between church and state.

Sincerely,
Roy Speckhardt
Executive Director

This is the letter I received back from my representative:
Dear David,

Thank you for writing me to share your support for the Johnson Amendment. I appreciate hearing from you on this important issue.

As you may know, the Johnson Amendment, a provision in the tax code that was passed in 1954, prohibits tax-exempt organizations, including churches and other houses of worship, from participating in political activities. The rationale behind the law is that the government should not subsidize political activity.

Campaign finance laws should be designed to shield our political system from the corrupting influence of money. As we have seen in the wake of the Supreme Court's decision in Citizens United, allowing unlimited spending by corporations and super PACs in our elections is deeply destructive and undermines Americans’ faith in our political system. I believe this constitutes a fundamental attack on "government of the people, by the people and for the people," as President Lincoln so eloquently described American democracy.

The Johnson Amendment provides an important safeguard to prevent non-profit organizations from exploiting their tax-exempt status to engage in political activity. If it were repealed, even more money could flow into the electoral process, further undermining our democracy.

I will continue working with my colleagues to stop special interests from unduly influencing our elections and I will keep fighting to return control of our democratic process to ordinary citizens.

Thank you, again, for sharing your thoughts with me on this issue. I hope you will continue to write me about issues that are most important to you.

All my best,

Jeffrey A. Merkley
United States Senator

I don't know why self-identified conservatives on this site won't admit that EVERY challenge to separation of church and state comes from the GOP! This is from the 115th Congress but it doesn't seem to have completely died yet.

@TheMiddleWay Or you could simply say it's had no further action but has not yet been listed as having failed in committee.

You're like somebody who has to press lit buttons in the elevator.

@TheMiddleWay whatever
