"Christians invented the idea of religion as it is commonly understood today. Rejecting the traditions of the ancient world as worship of false gods, they for the first time identified faith with belief. This equation is the chief source of the doctrinal violence that has ravaged western civilization ever since." (John Gray)
That’s been my objection to Christianity for a long time. How am I supposed to make myself believe anything? “Believe on the lord Jesus Christ”, they say, “and thou shalt be saved”. But it didn’t SEEM believable to me as a boy. I reckoned I’d just go to hell—there was no other way, but I could pretend to believe and spare my parents the agony of knowing what was going to happen to me. I thought if I went along with the charade I might begin to believe later, but it didn’t happen—my doubts about the crucifixion story only grew.
Christianity as presented by traditional churches is fatally flawed and should be discontinued IMO.
Once again: ITS NOT ABOUT BELIEF. Belief is nothing but an emotion, a value judgment, of little significance.
True indeed! ... The chief source of tremendous doctrinal violence...
