There was this philosopher for the life of me I forget his name, anyway he stated: "Religion reveals God, depth in religion reveals Atheism." My journey through the Academic World exposed me to many people and books knowledgeable in religion, and based on the information I processed I reasoned and arrived at a realization that it wasn't heavy enough for me. My conclusion then being that religion was used to control the Masses and cause Wars.
Depth in religion might reveal atheism, but meditation and contemplation reveal deep awareness, appreciation and gratitude for conscious awareness of nature or Ultimate Reality.
I've been reading Will Durant's Our Oriental Heritage which starts with prehistory and goes through the beginning of civilization in Sumeria, Egypt, Persia, etc and onto more the more recent history of India, China and Japan. It is a terrific book that shows clearly how humans invented religion and how it has been used by different civilizations and rulers. Like all human inventions it is a reflection of its creators. I've read several installments of Durant's History of Civilization series and this one has been the best, it's well worth the time to read.
