I am occasionally in a debate with another member of this site who espouses Libertarian ideas especially freedom. Are you really free if you are homeless and subject to diseases? [theatlantic.com]

I’m not doin links.. or Libertarians 🙂 But what I’ve discovered is where the non religious fanaticial Republicans went after their party purge… I became a Democrat, but determined those honest enough to dismiss religion -- yet too greedy to abandon their Republican ‘freedom from societal responsibilities’ mantra became ‘Libertarians’ 😕

The interlinking back-channel communications provided by some online chat platforms had fairly recently given an underground racist group the ability to evade law enforcement and societal scrutiny. The same concern has struck me regarding our resident ‘Libertarians.’

A wonderful encounter I had with a Nephew came about in his third year of college where he’d first encountered ‘Libertarians’ (thank technology for spell checkers!). He’d either been accosted by them on campus, online - or both. The concept was so ridiculously bazar to him, we had a blast!

Though politically a dead end, when push comes to shove, I think they vote Republican… Then ..as the nation goes to Hell -- look for us to argue with. The nation could use their help, but helping themselves appears their priority. And by the time they come to appreciate the advantages of community, it may be gone ~

One's freedom is a self-creation. His/her freedom s restricted by only fear and other negative boundaries s/he creates. Richard Lovelace, the English poet of 17th century England writes, "Stone Walls do not a Prison make,
Nor Iron bars a Cage;
Minds innocent and quiet take
That for an Hermitage.
If I have freedom in my Love,
And in my soul am free,
Angels alone that soar above,
Enjoy such Liberty." And John Milton, another 17th century writer tells us that ""The mind is itself and in itself can make a hell of a heaven or a heaven of a hell," which we can extrapolate to conclude that it can also make one free or make one a prisoner. I once knew a woman who lived on the beach in Hawaii, who wrote me letters telling me how much she hated that island paradise, how she considered herself a prisoner there. Your life is what ou say it is and you are free or not as you believe yourself to be.

It strikes me as a kind of Calvinist idea. Can you be free if your circumstances, moral or economic, limit you in how you think and live. Lack of education is probably another limiting factor.

We can absolutely afford to be better human beings, we just choose not to.

So true
