not sure. I know they are a sign of heavy weather and I have seen some fancy shot of mammata over Texas (they were bigger there) I do see plenty of lenticular clouds, indicative of high wind speeds at that altitude. They reliably appear at about the same place here on the eastern side of the mountains. Either that or the alien ships just like to hang out there
