I didn't have a religious instinct nor a parental instinct. Genetics?

That's the most concise and balanced executive summary of the negative correlation between religion and intelligence that I've seen.

It takes care to point out that while you can have smart religious people and stupid unbelievers, on balance, the ability to override religious instinct reflects higher intelligence of a certain kind -- the kind that allows you to override instinct in the interest of making decisions that are more functional in the modern, urban, technological, educated world in which we live. Religion and tribalism belong more to the hunter-gatherer world that for most humans is no longer relevant.
