What is the purpose of the Second Amendment to the Constitution?
U.S. citizens only please.
It was because, to quote Mao Tse Tung, political power grows out the barrel of a gun. In a country where only the police, the military, and the wealthy, have all the guns, they have all the power. We were guaranteed the right to keep and bear arms, so that we the people, would have political power.
The Constitution does not say anything about the people having political power in regard to the militia const. It says, "...provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions.."
As a matter of fact, it was called up to suppress disobedience of the Whiskey tax law against farmers ("people" ) and distillers.
@dahermit The "Whiskey Rebellion" was a revolt by squatters in southwest PA, against being evicted by absentee landowners. It had nothing to do with a tax on whiskey. Even though Alexander Hamilton (who commanded the 10,000 troops brought in to quell it) gave it that name, in order to denigrate it.
@davknight Nothing about "squatters" here: [en.wikipedia.org]

So, what are supposed to believe...virtually every available source, or some guy insisting otherwise on the internet?
