Will he put his money where his mouth is? I read private billionaires are going to fund the repairs.
I don't think the average person sees the iconic cathedral as a symbol of the glory of God. I think it's seen as an icon of our Judeo-Christian heritage and that extends far outside of the realm of religion into every aspect of our secular lives.
