Almost half of youngsters Spanish are non-believers. Overall, 30% are atheist or agnostic, etc.
There's hope yet for reason!

Making it easy to move around with EU, will be difficult for traditionalists to keep population under strict religion or ideology. It is just a matter of time until the new generations take over, Even the religious ones will not be the aggressive believer, the church will have less and less capacity to harness power and money from faith.

In my own observations...non scientific I stress! I can see that in European countries in general, Christianity....and in particular Catholicism is on the wane. It has been declining for some decades, but I believe the clerical child abuse scandals have increased that decline substantially. Here in Ireland, is a case in point....it was the most catholic country in Europe until about fifteen years ago. The decline here has been rapid and dramatic, same sex marriage, divorce and abortion legislation and a gay married, son of Hindu Indian immigrant , Prime Minister. Leo Varadker had a catholic mother and was raised as a catholic, but has since declared that he no longer practices that religion. The more Northerly European nations and the Scandinavians are all nominally Protestant countries, but attendance figures at churches indicates that their populations are all largely apathetic. It seems that of the western developed countries it’s only the USA that seems to be lurching to the right...with evangelical Christianity....going against the flow as it were!

@Allamanda Sadly...I concur about the anti-intellectualism.

Remember the old joke? Ireland's chief exports are potatoes and priests.

@Petter Not any more! There are practically no Irish priests entering the college at Maynooth, they are having to import them from Africa and Asia.

@Marionville What about potatoes? 🤣

@Petter They probably eat them all at home....!

@Marionville With gammon and cabbage, I hope.

@Petter if you’re lucky! Yes, actually the Irish have become very sophisticated....avocados and quinoa have arrived on these shores....it’s no longer spuds with everything! 😂

@Marionville Aaagh! They'll be demanding knives and forks next!! 😆😅🤣

I am given to understand that the rise of right-wing nationalism and xenophobia are happening in many countries besides the US, including the UK (e.g., Brexit). What is unique about the US, is the degree to which it's enabled and justified by a particularly regressive, dominionist, theocratic form of fundamentalist Christianity.

@mordant Yes you’re correct about the right wing nationalism and xenophobia being pretty widespread , but only the USA is becoming more religiously conservative...quite alarmingly so.
