I'd read somewhere that the phrase "rule of thumb" began with a law somewhere that stated it was illegal to beat your wife with anything larger than your thumb.

That was mostly referring to sticks, the stick that a man could leagaly beat his wife with could be no bigger "around" than his thumb.
I'm thinking a lot of woman preferred men with small hands. JS.
