The bible defines faith as "being sure of what we hope for and CERTAIN of what we do not see" (Hebrews 11). Biblical faith claims and demands knowledge. 1 Timothy 2:4 speaks of "being saved" (which of course is accomplished through faith--Ephesians 2:8-9) resulting in "KNOWLEDGE of the truth". In Romans 9:1 the bible speaks of the "truth" being confirmed in one's conscience through the holy spirit. Faith replaces evidence with emotion and claims knowledege on false premises. Faith is NOT agnsotiscm, in fact it is the polar opposite.

Agnoticism is the lack of proof, of the knowledge that has been stuffed into you by control freaks.

What you do when you don't have knowledge is one of the following:

  1. Make stuff up or subscribe to someone else's made up stuff (such as religion)
  2. Admit you don't know and default to unbelief unless and until new info is available; by implication, do research to remedy the lack of knowledge.

So faith is just one of the generic things you might do in the absence of knowledge, and certainly not the best thing.

I don't agree with Dan that agnosticism = religious faith, or with the implication of his statement that not resorting to religious faith means you have all necessary knowledge. I think this was a failed attempt at a provocative sound byte.

I consider faith in the religious definition as blindly following something without knowledge.
I believe it was Matt Dillahunty who said there is a difference between having faith and having a reasonable expectation.
