Isn't marriage a compromise? But to be continually harped/bitched at to change,is sending the wrong signals....

True.

Prior to my divorce many moons ago, I remember saying to myself “I’d rather be miserable with you than to be alone”.

That statement shocked me - in the way I needed to be shocked. It clarified that I needed to respect myself.

The constant criticism, spoken or not, the stick-in-the mud attitude, the do not smile it is inappropriate to be happy....should have got out Decades earlier

Yep. I'm doing this now. The constant negativity got me.

Stay away from anyone who wants to change you. Find someone who makes you want to be a better person, in your own way, for them - and they for you.

I have always found it's better to be alone than with someone who only sees flaws. I have never felt more alone than being in the presence of an intimate partner who makes you feel bad about yourself.
