What we call a democracy today is nothing of the sort, at best it is a perversion of the idea, representing not the people but a section of the will of a society via an elected representative who is free to make his or her own decisions even if they are in opposition to the will of those they represent.
Both first past the post and proportional representation ignore the will of those on the losing side and those who either choose not to vote, could not vote or are not allowed to vote by reason of age or social position.
In so called "free" countries votes can be bought and sold, tricked out of the gullible, hidden or replaced.
Ultimately electoral representative democracy is rule by those who can buy and cajole the public by guile or trickery or corruption.

I was listening to Bob Brown yesterday on RN. Regardless of what you think of him he did make some relevant points including having a more level playing field when it comes to advertising during an election. How much has Clive Palmer spent? There is no transparency when it comes to party funding. Both Lib and Lab are happy to ignore that.
The "natural" outcome will be shaped by those with the most power. It seems like wealth accumulation is their biggest desire.
Whatever gave you the impression we ever lived in a democracy? Past maybe 15k years ago when we still lived in small packs? I don't think there's one example of a "civilization" that was democratic.
