I asked my brother if he still believed in god. He said "If there was a god, that god has left us and we are on our own." This was a big step for him so I didn't push him.

A wise decision on your part. Eventually, "God" can become the bod who said "bang" 13.8 billion years ago, then said "Wow" that was spectacular and wandered off to make a new one elsewhere.

This was pretty much the Deist view. God may have started the universe, but doesn't much care what goes on in it. The Founding Fathers were basically atheists...

And who can prove otherwise?
