Been reading the Mars trilogy by Kim Stanely Robinson. It's really good but it's got me thinking. The characters work very hard at their assigned jobs in the first book, but by the second book (where I am now) they work some at different jobs but seem to be relatively free to take their own trips, do their own projects, etc. And all the different "factions" are arguing about politics. But I started thinking, isn't the point of any Utopia to allow the maximum number of persons this level of freedom? Shouldn't this be the point of social organization in general, to allow the maximum amount of freedom from actions related to ensuring necessities while ensuring the maximum levels of comfort and distraction for the maximum number? I realize this sounds egalitarian, but it doesn't automatically imply anything simplistic or uniform definitions of distraction.
