RANT ALERT. 'Spending on defense'? I hear that countless times per day: on radio, on TV, from other people, read in the headlines. What does it say about the state of humanity when 'spending on defense' is put ahead of spending on education, on integration, on awareness? You know, long term solutions. It angers me. But the feeling of helplessness saddens me more than I can bare sometimes. And then I bury my head in the sand, just like majority of us.

Military spending is a huge scam - feeding vast amounts of tax-payer's money to large corporations who themselves lobby and fund political parties of all colours. Education, healthcare and social services are all starved of money because there are no rich backers to bribe politicians. Simple really ... but yeah, sickening too. As always - if you want to work out the motives then follow the money 😉

@LejaJ - absolutely. It's an irony that all around the world voters have been showing that they are tired with old-style politics based around comfy deals and corporate lobbying, but have been hoodwinked into voting for even worse people with absolutely no intention of overturning the political status quo.

Hi Chris and LejaJ, as you can see, I live in Barrow in Furness in Cumbria. BAE (submarine) solutions - as this armaments factory is now known - is where the successor fleet of massive submersible nuclear missile launch platforms (commonly known as Trident subs) is to be built. The destructive capability of this weapon system is well documented so I won't tax your patience by reiterating the facts. Despite the horror of millions of deaths (and, probably, the extinction of ALL life on Earth) that would result in this weapon ever being used, the local workforce (well, 5,000 of them), the trade unions, the local press, the local council, our current (Labour!) member of Parliament - the Blairite John Woodcock who also has a wooden head - and ALL the local religious organisations support the building of these monstrosities on the grounds that it means JOBS which provides workers with the means of earning a living, local businesses benefit from there being a section of the population having regular, well paid, employment, and the churches will never do anything that might upset members of their congregations. Local manufacturing businesses, when compared to BAE, are quite insignificant so, in effect, BAE has a monopoly for employment in the region. Only a change of government, with the appropriate policies, could hope to change this situation. Some, naively in my opinion, believe the election of a Corbyn led Labour government would solve the problem. My own view is that too many in his own Party will toe the Establishment Line and scupper any moves he may make in that direction. Interesting times indeed, though 35 years of trying to dig heads out of the sand has left me a bit tired - but never defeated! As my comrades say, "The struggle continues!"

Medicine and military spending used to be real close to each other in the late 70's early 80's. THe distance between the two now is astounding
