American caravan arrives in Canadian 'birthplace of insulin' for cheaper medicine

Sat, 29 Jun 2019 14:58:30 EDT

A self-declared "caravan" of Americans bused across the Canada-U.S. border on Saturday, seeking affordable prices for insulin and raising awareness of "the insulin price crisis" in the United States.

The group called Caravan to Canada started the journey from Minneapolis, Minn., on Friday, and stopped in London, Ont., on Saturday to purchase life-saving type 1 diabetes medication at a pharmacy.

The caravan numbers approximately 20 people, according to Nicole Smith-Holt, a member of the group. Smith-Holt said her 26-year-old son died in June 2017 because he was forced to ration insulin due to the high cost. Type 1 diabetes often develops in childhood or early adulthood.

Outrageous that this is necessary the originators of insulin made the patent free so this wouldn't happen the naked greed is sickening. That this is happening is a indictment of Congress and the greed and corruption there

This is a shocking indictment of the US Healthcare system. Pharmaceutical companies should not be allowed to extort money from the sick. I hear Americans talk about our NHS as being a communist system in sheer ignorance. We in the U.K. pay for our health care by paying a National Insurance contribution, a tax which is taken out of our earnings at source, this is what pays for our free at the point of delivery NHS. It is under threat of being privatised when we do a trade deal with the USA after Brexit....Trump and US Ambassador to the UK (Robert Johnson of the Pharma family Johnson & Johnson) have both made that very clear.

It simply is a disgrace that people from the richest country in the world have to go to these lengths

Not to mention perhaps leaving us short who live here.
