Dog update: 5 mo old Leon is already mostly potty trained after a week or less with me. He knows the commands no, sit, stay, down/lie down, “go to bed” (his crate), and the names of his 3 favorite toys: moose, stick, ball. He follows me everywhere, spends much of his waking time teething on things, but he mostly listens and knows what’s not ok to chew on. He eats meals in his crate and goes there after coming in from doin his business to receive treats.

I can’t close him in his crate and leave his eyesight for long without him going apeshit but we’re working on it incrementally. He sleeps in the bed with me for now, and only occasionally gets scolded for playing too rough when he’s excited. He’s half pitbull so I’ve gotta make sure he knows it’s not ok to snap at people no matter how good their hands smell.

He’s incredibly strong already and sometimes wins a grip contest against me. Many times I can’t pull the cloth ball from his teeth if he doesn’t want me to.

He’s got the prettiest coat I’ve ever seen. The kind of sparkling, soft, short hair that hardly sheds at all, dries in a minute flat after a bath, and stays super clean so as to need very few baths to begin with. He’s a handful and I’m generally more of a catlike person, but he’s the best dog I could ask for. 💜

pictured below: playtime on the doggy run I created in my yard, naptime in the house, and just today he’s begun using the kitchen chairs like people 😂

aww...that last picture is the best...and the one with you and he taking a bonding snooze...I love dogs...they are the best...good to have training so that you continue to bond and he becomes socialized...

I am so happy for both of you!

He looks like he's a cross with a hunting hound (my dad would have said "gun dog" ). If he is crossed w/a hunting breed, his prey drive will be higher than a pit's. My dog Puck was a pit/lab/boxer mix (passed 18 May, 2018 st 16.5 years) do w/that lab drive, lots of fetch, outside time w/me, etc. With the pit/hound combo, he's really going to be attached to his person.

Crate training is invaluable & gives them "safe space". Once Puck was house broken, shutting him up in his crate was a rarity. The door was always open for him to retreat to his own space. I kept a cover over his crate but would only cover the front when I shut his door, to give it a more den like feel & to remove the visual distraction. This might help Leon be a little calmer when the door I'd shut, if you haven't tried that already.

Peanut butter kongs were the 'time to shut the door' treat too. I probably spoiled Puck no end.

Yeah his mama was a sweet redtick coonhound or American English Hound is the proper name I think. She was a rescued hunting dog we think. I found her at my place a couple weeks ago (there’s a post with pics of her a couple posts back in my history and another with more pics of Leon Redbone here). I took care of his mama a couple days before I found the owners, whose pitbull had previously got her pregnant. Only 2/8 survived: Leon the butterball and his little sis the runt. But yeah he is really fiercely attached and loyal! Gizmo would have been a fine name for him too, seeing how he can turn from super cute to super scary. I call him my direwolf in puppydog clothing 🙂
