"Private contractors have been shooting the camels from helicopters, with the carcasses left to rot in the desert. ”Eradication” of camels is ” not the goal, and it could never be achieved in any case,” the Australian government’s AFCMP website claims. Its purpose (couched in proper bureaucratese) is to “reduce the density of feral camels to a level where their negative impacts are within acceptable limits.”"
In Western Australia in the last ten years about 160,000 camels have been slaughtered.

Last night I watched the full 15 minutes of this movie - "the Judas Collar"
yeah, and they shoot wolves from helis in canada. what a bunch of sick bastards.
I am sad they are being killed BUT this is on the people who the money to bring these animals to a land not native to them. Then to not manage the herds because I bet it was just too much trouble. I realize the logistics of the outback and the need for this kind of trans port back in the day. The unplanned consequences and the animals by the price. I guess the meat is not edible or surely they would not be left to rot.
No worse than other meats. Relatively fat free.
A great example of commensalism with camels is the Australian Magpie:
