Inspired by a brief exchange on another post:

  1. Without using a dictionary, define "friend".
  2. At what point, (after which event, or length of time) do people in your life transition from acquaintances to friends?

Some people will consider everyone whose names they know as "friends". Others are more distant, or guarded, maybe waiting to see proof of friendship before they use the word. Where are you?

A friend is someone I can turn to if I’m struggling. It’s also someone I’ll share personal conversation with. I may like an acquaintance but I wouldn’t trust them with my secrets

A friend can be a lover or a spouse but a friend is someone you trust deservedly or not....we decide to make friends because we want to trust them....trust them for a date or lunch or advice or discussing a movie or book or study partner in school....a trusted neighbor who looks after your house or dog while you're gone....veterans are trained to trust comrades with their lives on missions or a letter unmailed to go back home.....sure people at church or work upon an introduction with a name declare friendship with no other notice or reply....some people never establish trust and have relationships THAT ARE NOT FRIENDSHIPS yet last their whole lives....Quakers call themselves: SOCIETY of FRIENDS....SUCCESS in life could be measured by nature of friendship more than family or career or estate

  1. Someone I feel an affinity with.

  2. Nothing to do with length of time...I have old friends from childhood and new friends from perhaps only a few weeks or months, but many more friendships were made in between. I have made a lot of new friends here on Agnostics....and of course have never met any of them, but there is a spark between us in the responses we make.

There is another category altogether whom I would just call acquaintances, some of these people I have also known a very long time, others I have met at various times along life’s path, but I would never class them as friends.

I agree....sometimes you can just tell from a few conversations that an individual's personality compliments yours and vice versa. Has nothing to do with time.....I have lots of acquaintances and (former) co-workers - but only a few true friends.

@Ms_McSteven perhaps so...but I’m sure you know what I mean. Only a few whom this would apply to amongst the hundreds of others,
