I am not going to get too riled up about this one...they do need to change the terms of "income"...right now, there is a bit of a flaw in the system that allows people to have large savings accounts and still qualify for food stamps because savings and interest earned are not classified as "income"....

Technically, my own mother could have received food stamps since her income met the level, getting about $12,000 a year in social security....they did not ask about her owning a $300,000 home, two cars, having a savings account, life insurance policies, etc. She did not apply...I am betting many do...

Here is the reporting of this abuse from NPR:

"But that has also led to one high-profile case that the administration and some Republicans repeatedly tout as evidence that the program needs to be fixed. The case involves a wealthy Minnesota man who had extremely low income, but huge assets, and said he applied for and collected SNAP to show that the program is flawed. Dean and others counter that the man intentionally abused the system and that it is highly unusual for someone with so many assets to have so little income, which includes interest on savings and investments."

From what I am reading, the proposal is addressing this loophole. Until I read otherwise, I don't see anywhere that people who need this are going to be affected as the CNN article seems to state...

@creative51 I know people like that as well...not sure that this is the group that he is targeting...the system needs an overhaul to protect people like that and not the abusers...the system is wrong, not the people it needs to serve. My brother made less than $10 too much from workers' comp after a serious truck accident...yes, this needs to be fixed by stopping those who take advantage of the system. I am not discounting those who are truly in need...both need to be fixed.

@creative51 Yeah...that helps...

@creative51 I do not disagree...no one in our country should go hungry...I work at the homeless shelter each month and it is humbling and makes me angry...

Politicians are the biggest 'welfare cheats' of all!

You have to pay for the corporate tax cuts somehow. 😣 And they won't need healthcare after they're dead. 😠

If the minimum wage were raised to $15 an hour, most peopel on foods stamps would no longer qualify. However Trump seems to think taking food stamps away, and leaving the people without resources so that we have children starving helps Make America Great Again.

No surprise here! Jeebus always approved of starving people......
