People who do this drive me UP THE WALL. Opinions?

"...... the scientific research suggests that you should adopt an ancient rhetorical method favoured by the likes of Julius Caesar and known as ‘illeism’ – or speaking about yourself in the third person. If I (David Robson) were considering an argument that I’d had with a friend, for instance, I might start by silently thinking to myself: David felt frustrated that…’ The idea is that this small change in perspective can clear your emotional fog, allowing you to see past your biases."

Uhm, yeah, while I agree with you about people who actually speak this way (I can't help but think they're nuts) the article was about doing it during rumination, not conversation.

...might use illeism for purely rhetorical purposes but, when applied to genuine reflection, it appears to be a powerful tool for wiser reasoning.

I can see the value in detaching from yourself while trying to examine what you did. Hope I remember to try it and see if it works.

Unless it becomes a habit and turns you into another one of those annoying people. Not that I'm not already annoying 🙂

@TheoryNumber3 I'm pretty sure most would argue I couldn't become more annoying, so maybe I'll pick that habit up to prove them wrong.

So far your annoyance factor seems low, but then again I don't know you. 😉

Just for the fact that the Donald does this is in itself enough for me not to ever do it.

Spinliesel thinks you should do that when speaking with Julius Ceasar.

He hasn't called lately. I think he's moved on 🙂
