I've been seeing a lot of very ableist memes and discussion of Dr. Stephen Hawking. While he was alive, he called his wheelchair and AAC Device (communication computer) his freedom. He spent much of his life active in the Disability Rights Community. Dr. Hawking frequently said that due to his motor neurone disease, he had more time to think about actual physics, since he wasn't expected to do the usual administration duties required of most professors of his standing.
Please be aware that memes showing him "free" of his wheelchair are seen by people in the disability community as devaluing our lives. You are telling us that disabled lives are not worth living. In short, that we should JUST DIE.
Would you tolerate that if anyone said that about race? That (insert color, continent, or ethnicity) lives weren't worth living? Hopefully you're not that racist.
So, in short, please stop.
His wheelchair was the least interesting thing about Hawking. Let's all thank science (and some innate resilience) for giving him the ability, motivation, and yes, freedom, to do what he did in the interests of humanity and the future. I think we have to understand that religious nuts are just trying to comfort themselves with the idea of another life to come, and they have no idea what rationality is, nor compassion, for that matter.
Unfortunately, I've been seeing those crappy memes posted here, in this forum, or I wouldn't have posted a protest of them here.
@TaraMarshall Bummer. Alas, not everyone on Agnostic.com is wise, compassionate, and of like mind in any way, shape, or form. Protesting dopiness and/or meanness is a good thing.
