I have a confession, you can judge me for it (I do). I got into an Internet debate with a theist recently. One thing led to another and we talked about forgiveness and my revelation that I am beyond redemption by their god, no matter what. They, of course, replied that I can still be saved from anything. Then I asked them about a particular bible verse (Mark 3:29) since they like them their bibles. Without missing a beat, he said that anything can be forgiven. I then posted the bible verse (about blaspheming the holy spirit as an eternal sin), and nobody replied anything.
It's been a few days, should I give up on checking that thread? Was hoping to make a few of them think about their beliefs and that they don't know their book/godhead as well as they claim.

No comments is a pretty good indication they did think about what you said and had zero comebacks...

Much as I weary of their constant appeals to nuanced "context" to tap dance around these things, I do think this passage is one of the few that is clear about what exactly it means: blaspheming the holy spirit is attributing the work of the holy spirit to the demonic. "Jesus made this statement because they were saying, 'He has an unclean spirit. ...' "

Since atheists don't believe in any deities, they don't believe in the Christian deity, and they don't believe in the holy spirit or in Satan or demons or the supernatural in general. So no atheists would make the charge that someone has "an unclean spirit". It would requires us to afford belief to things we don't afford belief to.

I'm surprised that none of these brilliant apologists had the sense to point that out.

Only 2 flaws here:

  1. I was Christian at one time (raised Catholic), so to turn away and say god didn't do it came after a short stint as a Pagan (wasn't ready to let go of the security blanket).
  2. Some of them really can't believe that we don't believe god is real, we are just influenced by an unclean spirit and thus blaspheming.

Nice one! Short circuit and feedback loop on the way.

Well done Mark!

As Marion says probably drop it and mark it up!

Oh they love that one, most of them don't even know about the unforgivable sin and discovering it go in to a kind theological hard disc crash.
I am reminded of that Nomand robot in star trek blowing self up because it can't cope with having made a mistake.

As soon as I saw Star Trek, I thought about "What does God need a starship for."

@PadraicM Star Trek five is worth enduring the other 90 minutes for that one line.

Just give it up! You’ve managed to stun them into silence...quit whist your ahead!

I think most of them haven't a clue as to what blasphemy against the holy spirit even is--if they even know that verse is there. It seems that you can blaspheme against Jesus and God, but not the holy spirit. This makes no sense; so it is one of those things where they will just ignore it--at least that is what I have always seen believers do. This said, I am pretty sure I have blasphemed against the entire trinity because I call it all bullshit.

You will I am sure find Very convoluted "explanations" and apologies for You, about how your mind is clouded......you cannot talk someone into common sense, they either find it for themselves. Or not.
