Yes this is very true. I was reading an article not too long ago about veteran suicide and the point made was that overall there were not higher rates of suicide among veterans versus the civilian population that had never served. I don't know how accurate that is. I wonder about comparable rates in areas of other social problems such as homelessness, poverty, substance abuse, and mental health concerns. It seems mental health services, social services, should be a highly intrinsic part of veteran experience.
The VA might try to help in some ways.

It’s up to individuals to come forward however.

When they are young the government promises them the world. Then force to do unethical deeds like murder, because they lied About it really being an offensive mission, not a defensive mission. Then something in your soul dies, and then it's difficult to handle a normal life and they are cut short financial.
Who ever comes out of the that, positive, is a hero.
