As a person who grew up during the days of segregation, I think it impossible not to have thought that being White was better. It is a long process to grow out of the implicit lessons of early childhood, and there might always be some vestiges.
By consciously focusing on truth our thinking is corrected—feelings and behavior ensue. We set good examples for our children and grandchildren. We come to love and appreciate our Black neighbors and to realize that our country benefits greatly by their presence.
