There is truth in this cartoon, but I will not feel much pain. Recently I was reading about Aztec culture. They would hold religious ceremonies where they gave both human and animal sacrifices to appease the gods. Sometimes there would be hundreds of victims. Most were prisoners of war but some were from their own group. They even sacrificed their own children.
Maybe it was a way of keeping the population within bounds.

Much the same with many pre-historic cultures. If the Incas had a bad season the chief Inca would be sacrificed to the gods.
The dynamics make sense, just not with our more enlightened experience
