Even in the Senate he has to answer questions from the Democrats. His lawyers know he can't tell the truth and he will in the end use the excuse it would be a perjury trap. There is no such thing as a perjury trap. You either tell the truth or you don't.

Of course he wants a trial,, under his rules not those of the Constitution or even the basic rules. He would like nothing better than a reverse kangaroo court where the court itself is being mocked.
