We each go and get ourselves something we really want, buy it for ourselves, and consider it as the others present. That way we both always got at least one gift we wanted that was within our budgets.
This year he bought me a new vaporizer, and he's been dead for 5 months. I cannot stress the upside of this arrangement enough.
