A close friend of mine goes back and forth between extreme antithiesm and Pascal's Wager.
Something that has kept Christianity from piddling out is the fear and torment of hell. But for me the Bible does not even make sense. The supposed morality and holiness of Yahweh so flawed. How can "the author of morals" strike down women and children, condone slavery, allow his male followers to have many wives, yet the women are considered whores to have more than one man. And to even consider the contradictions is doubt, leading to hell. What kind of morality is that? (I'm sorry for the rant...This had been festering inside for quite some time).

Pascal's Wager is a false dichotomy, among other things. What if Shiva or Odin were real, and were displeased with your believe in Yaweh? Besides which, any god who would take a pass on punishing you for unbelief because they're unaware that you're pretending to believe "just in case" is pretty inept.

your friend just has that classic conflict between fear of hell and the hatred of the fear of hell. its sad. I wouldn't be surprised if as a Youngster the fear of hell wasn't driven into him pretty deeply.

It took me 20 years to rid my mind of such poison.
@anglophone it's a tough one.
@hankster Agreed, it is (or at least "was" in my case).
Consider hell for a second, what sort of "author of morality", gives out infinite punishment for finite crimes.
PS. the bible interpreted though theology, also says that watching the sufferings of those in hell, and enjoying it, is one of the things expected of those in heaven.
