Am I an alarmist? I am a lifelong student of history. And I believe it teaches us great lessons . I have been quite alarmed by the rise of nationalism, fascism, and anti science and immigration. With climate change ( welcome to 75 degrees in NC in January) and the incredible erosion of our democracy, I just renewed my passport early to get an additional ten years. I am asking my grown children to do the same and have started investigating what it takes to move my money to another country.

Am I overreacting?

Nope. It's become painfully obvious that no one has learned a damn thing from history - and so we simply repeat the cycles over and over again. Just be careful - there are lots and lots of scams and fraudulent schemes designed to part you from your money.

@ lavergne the russian government just resigned trump follows putin. We are in big trouble.

I don't feel you are overreacting at all. I've actually had a move abroad in the works since I left Sweden in 2007. I have many friends over there and even have volunteers for Sambo (a legal status in Sweden for unmarried couples living together.) But my daughters won't join me.

@kymnacg sambos?! Oh my good for you! Well that's two of us that feel that way. That's not many , eh?

@Bigwavedave It's a way to move to Sweden offered by friends...not necessarily friends with benefits. Which, in Swedish, is Knulla Kompis, or KK.LOL I learned that when I would use "kk" instead of "ok"... a kindly Swede let me know my faux pas.

Not at all - smart move. Better to be prepared just in case. You haven't made any sacrifices to do these things, right? So no harm no foul. Even if you do move and everything turns out ok here, you might be happier somewhere else anyway or you may not like it and move back. It's easy to feel a sense of helplessness with the things that are going on today - yes, there were concerns in the past and everything turned out ok but that doesn't mean you should just assume it will always be that way. Hope for the best but prepare for the worst is the smart thing to do.

@Donnaka if he wins........

Certainly, it is not a bad idea to keep an eye on how things are in the world. Sometimes it seems like the world is going to hell in a handbasket, but I believe that overall we are living in the best possible times.

Are there problems? Sure. But look, in the 80's we were sure Ronny was gonna nuke Russia because Nancy got the word from her astrologer that Mars was in an auspicious house. And it showed as the Reagan era gave us "Red Dawn" and "The Day After", Iran-Contra and voodoo economics.

And who could forget the freak-out everyone had when Geo Bush Part I declared a "new world order"?

Nixon's sense of criminal entitlement
McCarthy's commies under every bed
Two World Wars

The list goes on. But fundamentally, we get through these things to better times. Trump and his policies will not last forever and the authoritarian figures with their jackboots and moral indignation will be replaced with a new wave of hippies and peace-niks.

"People movin' out, people movin' in.
Why, because of the color of their skin.
Run, run, run, but you sho' can't hide
An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.
Vote for me and I'll set you free
Rap on, brother, rap on.
Well, the only person talkin' 'bout love thy brother is the preacher
And it seems nobody's interested in learning but the teacher
Segregation, determination, demonstration, integration, aggravation,
humiliation, obligation to our nation
Ball Of Confusion that's what the world is today (yeah, yeah)
The sale of pills is at an all time high
young folks walkin' 'round with their heads in the sky
Cities aflame in the summer time, and oh the beat goes on
Eve of destruction, tax deduction,
City inspectors, bill collectors,
Evolution, revolution,… "

@latentumcattus I loved that song.

@Bigwavedave Me too.....and his comments are certainly insightful.

Probably. Sounds like moral panic elicited by the media because it sells copy.

If you do want to move to another country though best check what the immigration requirements are so you know your choices, and then what type of society you are going into.

@geoffrey51 what do you mean moral panic?

@Geoffrey51 ohhhh ibsee. Lol you don't live here.

@Bigwavedave Moral panic is a sociological term which means a media position that focuses on causing anxiety in its readership etc. in order to stir an interest to continue selling/delivering copy. Usually preying on the fears and anxieties that they have created in the first instance.

@Geoffrey51 how are you feeling about the fires, I am curious....

@Bigwavedave What’s a fres?

@Geoffrey51 a fire typed with giant thumbs.

@Bigwavedave It’s devastating. The wildlife are hit really bad and there is some talk that koalas may be considered an endangered species now.

The air pollution in Melbourne yesterday because of the smoke made it the most air polluted city in the world.

Fire season has only just begun so everyone has to remain calm and sensible and call out the arsonists who love this time of year, fucking idiots.

Unfortunately a lot of it could have been avoided by regular controlled burning over the winter months and management of tinder, it being so dry, as I understand it but some pandering to environmental lobbies wouldn’t allow it to happen.

It’s just holding on and acknowledging the incredible work that the fire service is doing. We just don’t need dry lightning right now.

It’s one of those rare occasions in the media where it is as bad as it looks.
