Greatest country in the history of the world ? That is becoming more and more laughable as Mitch and his Senate toadies trample the constiution yet one more time...this time as they defy all precedent and common sense in a sham trial, in order to keep our immoral traitor king in power. Greatness does not come from claiming greatness. It comes from being great. I hope we can survive this blight in our history, and begin to slowly reclaim our greatness.

The "Greatest Country" nonsense originated as U.S. Cold War propaganda. It was used to combat the growing interest in socialism as an alternative to colonialism, in Third World countries. The gist of it was that Capitalism was the only economic system that could improve the lives of Third World peoples: "Be like us, and you too, can have automobiles, refrigerators, and television sets!". As a collateral effect, it was designed to make American workers more accepting of mindless consumerism, and develop in them a more positive attitude towards wage-slavery: "Aren't you piss-ants grateful you work for us?"

What country was that?

@Bobby9 Another masterful erudite response I see!

It is my opinion we have never been a great country, a great power yes, a great country no. A great country serves and takes care of all of the people. A great country does not discriminate against certain segments of its population. We have never come close to fitting that criteria. Of course, you may have a different idea of what makes a country great.

Actually, no, I do not have a different idea of what makes a country great. And I agree with everything you say.
