20 yrs ago I stayed at my cousin's farm. Lovely place down Taree way. Free range and 'humane'. Next morning my cousin apologised for the cow cry-mooing all night for her baby who had been sold. Cousin said calmly that the cow would keep it up for about a week. Near broke my heart.

I grew up on traditional dairy farms, where cows had names and were milked by hand.

Times were different then. As you say the herd members were part of the family and having seen places where the animals, for survival, were part of the family and living in the house with the humans in order to protect the animals from climate and predators, am saddened by today's factory farming methods.
