YHWH, the so-called God of the Israelites, most likely started out in the Canaanite pantheon as a god of metallurgy. The bible simply tracks the history of a cult that formed around a volcano. There are numerous biblcal texts that speak of volcanoes and we can see the symbolism of fire / furnace / smoke / mountain / thunder / tremors all throughout the Old Testament.

And if you're superstitious, I get it. Seeing a volcano, much like seeing a tornado, I would imagine would be a powerful and frightening experience. Especially if the volcanic eruption they saw was the Santorinini eruption which may have been the most powerful eruption in human history. That is certainly a sight that I can image would spark myths and legends, but this is 2020. Come on. Everyone should be able to read the biblical descriptions and say "Yes... cloud by day, pillar of fire by night.... that was a volcano." and move on.
