Imagine how things were in 1917 when Glaswegian schoolteacher John McLean was imprisoned and tortured - no internet, no independent press? He only received about 18 months gaol for his exercise of free speech and on his return to Glasgow a physically destroyed man was welcomed by about 250,000 citizens.
