How scientists waste money needed more to feed the hungry on earth... 2,500 millions robot arrive to Mars to search for "life on Mars"... they could use that money to feed the Located already hungry on Earth but that would not be "Academic or Scientific".

I don't hate science. And there's plenty of money to feed the hungry without taking it from science. The churches have it.

So the inference is we should stop all science or national defense projects to feed the world's hungry? My question is with all the money spent and collected by things as food aid concerts where has that gotten us???
I would also ask if one wants to feed another perhaps one should ask how many generations of a family has been getting food aid? One major problem with giving food is distribution. Usually food is distributed to one place and people come to that place and eventually settle there as they cannot grow their own. So we are basically creating human feed lots. What we desperately need is not more food but more family planning services. I support one such organization EngenderHealth. [engenderhealth.org] This is the only viable and 'humane' way of alleviating starvation in the world. Pro-action not more, useless reaction.

The budget for these projects is NOTHING compared to what the U.S. spends on the military industrial complex, I get the point but it is NOT a lack of money, it bad priorities. Our government feeds the industrial complex and the wealthy everyone else gets crumbs.
Sadly we continue to elect officials that promote the sort of government spending that keeps people poor, hungry and ill.

But the money expended in Military Industrial Complex goes to Science of the Military Industrial Complex. We are communicating via the Internet... guess what? without the Military Industrial Complex there will never be INTERNET. It was Created for a means of secure communications between Top Commanders in different Locations. That is it... there was no other reason to create it. I spent 20 years in the Communications Field of the Military... Every Improvement was Nothing but Science. Nothing else... Science. I was around to see a lot of changes... from communicating via Morse Code Line of Sight to communicating via sattelite (The Ultimate Line of Sight). I remember when a ship will go to a 6 month deployments with 3 satellite phones. For emergency only. Co, XO and Supply Officer had them. I remember setting up communications for MARS System... where you try to contact a volunteer on land that will take your message to a telegraph station and pay for it or will call your loved one Long distance and connect you or simply pass back and forth what was said. Later telephone company will install public phones and so on and on to todays cell phones. Believe me without the Military you will not be using cell phone to call EUROPE. Military is that Greedy Monster that will never END from WANTING MORE and make you believe that everything you enjoy is somehow tied up to their military complex. IT IS THE NATURE OF THE BEAST AND WHERE science FOUND ITS MORE LOYAL ALLY.

@GipsyOfNewSpain Long playing tapes came out of the super secret tap our governement had on a certain under sea communications cable on the far east coast of the Soviet Union. Sadly priorities in our nation of greed are very very screwed up

People often make the point of "Do you know how many people could be fed for the cost of ......(name your program)?" NASA/JPL is less then 15 minutes from here and I assure you that everyone who works there uses their salary to buy food, housing, education, etc. The money is shared by everyone who works in science/space/development and all the myriad other jobs associated with these programs. What could we do? Buy "Happy Meals" for all the hungry in the world and then go home? Science, learning how to farm Mars (for example) can provide solutions for hunger in the Sahara. It really does ''trickle down.''

@GipsyOfNewSpain If I'd realized you're so obnoxiously determined to start a fight, I'd have left your comment and passed on. As a matter of fact, my ancestors came here long before there WAS an American nation. They grew their own food. (Not that any of your accusations are relevant.) Goodbye.

Spending on space is easily some of the most cost effective spending government does, it's improved our daily lives in countless ways, and benefited agriculture and other sciences that feed people. It's the staggering amounts of money being pissed away on war, weapons, and fossil fuel subsidies that not only is a staggering waste of resources that could help people, it's actually causing starvation and poverty worldwide. Spending on space science is not only a minuscule fraction of that wasteful spending; it's helping, not hurting.

Do you realize Moron that the money spend on War is spend on Science?

@GipsyOfNewSpain Yes, a percentage of war spending is spent on science, most of it isn't. And even then, it would be better spent on basic science or applied practical science, there's not a whole lot of practical uses for new scientific ways to kill people.
