What a fun week with the folks!

I’d add lots of details but really, who cares? Suffice it to say that dealing with 1 person with Alzheimer's is fun enough, 2 is even better.

Add in a concussion to the slightly lucid one, and you get a week of your life shot that you’ll never get back.

Both of your parents have Alzheimer's? That's gotta be really hard.

I live next door to my parents, my mother has dementia (presumably Alzheimer's, as her mother). My dad, who will be 87 in July, had to have several fractured disks "cemented" (kyphoplasty); and he cannot stand for more that a few minutes at a time before it gets too painful for him. And, of course, my mother cannot remember this and complains that all he does is sit around doing nothing.

Either that or she cannot even remember who he is. She comes to my house every once in awhile, scared, because a "strange man" is in her house 😟.

I cannot imagine how rough it would be if he also had dementia.

Its awesome. Add in my mom's rugged individualism/dirt farmer raised/I don't want to be a burden set in stone mindset of refusing to let anyone help her with anything and life is just a continual trickle of minor disaster after minor disaster. Least we made a dent in that - this time she agreed to some home health care assistance for a 2 week trial. Started today and she's happy as can be. So far.

Sorry about your mom. Don't be afraid to ask literally everyone for help and if she's starting to forget your dad she'll eventually forget where you live or who you are and go looking for help somewhere else. Or panic and injure someone. You and your dad are going to face some tough choices.

This disease fucking sucks.

If they have any type of long term care insurance use it. They might not even remember they have it. I found the folks while digging through paperwork trying to fix a totally non insurance related issue.

@1of5 My older daughter and her husband live in an apartment attached to their house and, as I said, I live next door. But, it is still a worry that she leaves the house either at night or early morning hours. So far she has come straight to my house; but, yes she will eventually forget that I am here.
We are currently trying to figure out the best way to deal with that issue as she gets worse.

And, yes, it is a horrible disease.
