Yes, that would have been very scary. But most people now have a very much better understanding than hundreds of years ago. We are now in a position to manage the Covid-19 pandemic.

@MizJ It may overwhelm the healthcare system in the USA, but lockdowns in other countries seem to be effecting a good degree of management. I have a personal interest in how Australia in general, and Western Australia in particular, are managing the situation.
What happened was the church got the blame for not praying hard enough, monks got attached in the street, many of the indentured workers died and the lord of the manor had no one to do the gardening.
When it died down labour was in short supply, the feudal lords had to pay for labour hire and the cracks in the feudal system began to open a free market for labour, leading to more opportunities for artificers and more mercantile opportunities.
Much like the manner in which the current neoliberalist structure could be challenged.
