Here's a macabre thought that I hope does not come to pass.
The population of Italy, 60 million, is less than one fifth of the population of the USA. The states have almost 8 times more people than Spain.
Italy has so far had 5,000 dead. Multiply that by 5 and you get 25 thousand.
Spain has imposed ultra stringent quarantine, far tougher than Italy, with people forbidden to work without permission. Multiply Spain's deaths by 8 and you get over 10,000 deaths.
In both countries, the totals are still rising.
And we all know who to blame. When you cut all safety measures for the sake of the 'economy' this is the result. So much for the 'best medical system' in the world. We have gotten down to the level of third world nation.
Worse yet, the infection curve is climbing more steeply by the day in Europe.
@Petter I've been preparing hospitals to deal with this and Friday I thought we were on top of this thing. Seeing the numbers this weekend scares the living daylights out of me. I suddenly feel like we didn't do enough even though we went way overboard and planned for the absolute worse. Ordered 1.5 million in new emergency ventilators on Friday with another half million we'll probably order on Monday. Rebuilt 17 old ventilators from old units. Tripled our negative pressure rooms and opened 2 new covid isolation wards with another on the way this coming week. I can't imagine accomplishing any more than this...
And yet I'm scared shitless like we should have done more... I can't even imagine what more we could have done, but still...
@JazznBlues It's worrying, yet there are still "gung ho" idiots who regard it as a minor, trivial problem, and will continue to do so until people they know end up in intensive care. The saddest thing is that they then are the ones who complain the loudest about lack of care facilities!
