I have just read the preface to the Routledge classic edition of Bertrand Russell's "Why I am not a Christian". I had not previously realised that while T.S Eliot was a brilliant poet he was nevertheless a disaster area when it came to clarity of thought.
A point to remember here is that rather than a judgment upon Russell's philosophy, Eliot is striking at the man. Vivien unfortunately had a mental illness which compounded the problems in their relationship, only for Russell to take sexual advantage of her.
Eliot was a newly converted Catholic at the time, yes, with a renewed religious insight, but clear in his thinking and erudition. Without his intellect and vision, the construction of The Waste Land would not have been possible
Russell - Celebrated thinker, fuck of a human being.
Thanks for sharing that background.
