If an atheist saw the moon turn red, the seas boil, the ground crack open and thousands of meteorites fall from the sky, what might he think?

a… Moon turns red.

Aha! Nice lunar eclipse.

b… Seas boil.

Oh wow! Immense amount of geothermal activity.

c… Ground cracks open.

Oh damn! Another quake.

d… Meteorites fall from the sky.

Yep. Got us another science illiterate here. Meteorites are the result of a meteor making it through the atmosphere to impact.

I know what you were looking for, but you’re not going to get it here. Better stick with folks of like lack of mind for that.

Of course, you must realize that if the seas boil, we won’t be here to witness any of it if it happened simultaneously because the global temperature climbing to that point would have killed everything long before the sea boiled. Providing that your little fantasy were to have circumvented basic physical principles and all this were to take place instantly, we still wouldn’t witness anything because we would likewise all die instantly. That is, unless your imaginary Buddy in the Big Blue Sky magically made it so we could live long enough to witness it all. I know, nasty little details brought on by reality are always spoiling great apocalyptic ideas.

Now, let’s turn this around, shall we? Suppose none of this happens in the manner described? Suppose instead that lunar eclipses continue being lunar eclipses, the seas rise and fall in temperature consistent with conditions, seismic activity continues more or less along historic lines, and the influx of meteoric material remains at normal levels. What will you think about that? Yeah, I know, it’s all part of the Big Guy’s Grand Plan and we mere mortals cannot fathom the complexities of the heavenly mind.
